The numbers

A 1440p monitor has 2560 × 1440 pixels — about 3.7 million. A 4K UHD monitor has 3840 × 2160 pixels — about 8.3 million, or 2.25 times as many. Your graphics card has to render every one of those pixels every frame, so all else being equal, 4K roughly halves your frame rate compared with 1440p.

Sharpness and pixel density

On a 27 inch screen, 1440p gives 109 pixels per inch and 4K gives 163. Both look sharp from a normal desk distance, but 4K makes fine text, distant textures and UI elements visibly crisper.
