Gaming Monitors for Competitive and Esports Gaming

What matters in a competitive esports gaming monitor: 165–200Hz refresh rate, 1ms response, 24-inch size, DisplayPort and low input lag. GAMEO's F24-200, Q24-165 and F27-180 compared on verified specifications for UK players.

THE SHORT ANSWER

For ranked and competitive play, prioritise refresh rate (165Hz–200Hz), a 1ms response time, Adaptive Sync and a 24-inch screen you can take in at a glance. Resolution and HDR come second. The GAMEO F24-200 (24-inch Full HD 200Hz IPS, £98.50) is GAMEO's fastest model; the Q24-165 adds QHD sharpness and the F27-180 gives a larger 180Hz screen.

What makes a monitor 'competitive'

Competitive play rewards seeing each frame as early and as clearly as possible. Three specifications decide that: refresh rate (how many frames per second the panel can show), response time (how fast pixels change, which controls blur) and input lag (the delay between your PC's output and the picture). Everything else — colour, HDR, resolution — is a comfort feature in a ranked match.

GAMEO does not publish independent input-lag measurements, so this guide only states the manufacturer specifications: refresh rate and 1ms MPRT response time.

Refresh rate: 165Hz, 180Hz or 200Hz

At 60Hz a frame is on screen for 16.7ms; at 165Hz it is 6.1ms; at 200Hz it is 5.0ms. The step from 60Hz to 165Hz is enormous and every player feels it. 165Hz to 200Hz is a smaller but real step that frequent FPS players notice in tracking and flick shots. Make sure your PC actually reaches those frame rates in your main game — a 200Hz monitor at 90fps gains nothing over a 165Hz one.

Size and resolution for esports

Professional players overwhelmingly use 24-inch monitors because the whole screen sits inside central vision at desk distance. Full HD at 24 inches is the easiest to drive at 200fps and still sharp. QHD at 24 inches is the choice if you also work or play slower, detailed games on the same screen. 27 inches suits players who sit further back or mix competitive and single-player titles.

Connections, sync and settings

  • Use DisplayPort 1.4 on PC for the full refresh rate with Adaptive Sync enabled; every GAMEO model includes it.
  • In Windows, set the refresh rate manually (Settings → Display → Advanced) — a new monitor often defaults to 60Hz.
  • Set the on-screen overdrive (OD) to the middle setting first; the most aggressive setting can introduce inverse ghosting.
  • Turn on the in-game frame-rate cap a few fps below the refresh rate when using Adaptive Sync to avoid tearing at the top of the range.

COMMON QUESTIONS

FAQ

Is 200Hz worth it over 165Hz for esports?

If your PC holds 200fps in your main game, yes — frames arrive 1.1ms sooner and motion is slightly clearer. If it sits at 120–160fps, a 165Hz monitor gives the same experience for less.

Is IPS fast enough for competitive gaming?

Yes. Modern IPS gaming panels, including every GAMEO model, reach a 1ms MPRT response time while keeping the colour and viewing angles TN panels never had.

Should I pick 24 inch or 27 inch for FPS games?

24 inch is the esports standard because the whole picture stays in your central vision. Choose 27 inch (GAMEO F27-180) if you sit further back or also play slower, more cinematic games.

What are my rights if the monitor is faulty?

UK consumers keep their statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 whatever a warranty says: goods must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. GAMEO adds a 30-day replacement for manufacturing defects and a 12-month service warranty, with a 14-day cooling-off period for change of mind.
