Best Gaming Monitor in 2026: How to Choose the Right Display

1. Start with screen size and desk distance

Gaming monitors cluster around two sizes: 24 inch and 27 inch. A 24 inch monitor keeps the whole picture in your central vision at a normal 60–70cm desk distance, which is why it dominates esports. A 27 inch monitor is more immersive for single-player games, films and multitasking, and it's the natural home for 4K resolution.

2. Choose a resolution your hardware can drive

Full HD (1920 × 1080) is the easiest to run at very high frame rates and still looks sharp at 24 inches. QHD (2560 × 1440) adds 78% more pixels for noticeably crisper detail and is the sweet spot for mid-range and upper-mid-range graphics cards. 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) is the sharpest option but demands a strong GPU or a current-generation console.

A useful rule: buy the resolution your graphics card can hold at your target frame rate today, not the one you hope to afford a GPU for later. A high-refresh Full HD monitor running at 180 frames per second is a better gaming experience than a 4K monitor limping along at 45.

3. Refresh rate: 165Hz is the new baseline

Refresh rate is how many frames per second the monitor can display. Office monitors run at 60Hz; gaming monitors in 2026 start at 165Hz and go up to 200Hz and beyond. The jump from 60Hz to 165Hz is dramatic — motion is smoother, aiming feels more connected and input lag drops. Going from 165Hz to 200Hz is a smaller step that competitive players will notice and casual players may not.

4. Panel type and response time

5. Connectivity and ergonomics
